A super blawg review

What About Clients? is this week’s host of Blawg Review, the carnival of law-related blogs. The proprietor, Dan Hull, has excellent taste when it comes to blogs, so the outstanding job he’s done is no surprise.

Tanned, rested, and ready

Yesterday Mike announced his return to blogging at Crime & Federalism, where he will provide “[d]aily commentary on criminal law, civil rights, and what’s new and outrageous in the law.” Last September he began a hiatus. Now he’s back, with batteries recharged. And he promises this time not to care whether he offends anyone. For example, the title of his first substantive post of 2008 is This is Your Face on Meth: Thanks Conservatives.

I must have missed their call

Says here that the folks from TypePad visited some of their members in New Orleans. Although they missed me and a some others I can think of offhand, they did manage to catch a few good folks at home: Margaret Saizan of Beyond Katrina, photographer Matthew White, Jonah Langenbeck of spasticrobot (I love that name!), and, upriver in Baton Rouge, the LSU Press Blog. If you haven’t checked them out before, give them a look.

Q: Where’s Travis McGee?

A: In Kabul, Afghanistan. Where’s Travis McGee? is the blog of Brad Parker, former New Orleans blogger now serving with the U.S. Navy JAG Corps in Afghanistan. Last week, I was happy to upload his Dispatch No. 1, which he distributed by e-mail. This week, Brad has returned to WTM?, where he has uploaded Dispatch No. 2. It’s a damn good piece of writing. Read it.

A labor of love

If you’re looking for some Labor Day reading, check out this week’s Blawg Review, hosted by George’s Employment Blawg. Besides offering the usual collection of interesting posts from the law-blog world, George also recounts the rough-and-tumble and sometimes violent history of labor relations in the United States—events that gave rise to today’s labor laws. George obviously labored long over it, and the effort shows. Well done.

Back-to-school Blawg Review

David Gulbransen, a.k.a. Dave!, once again hits a home run as this week’s host of Blawg Review. As you may know, Blawg Review is a traveling blog carnival focused on law-related blogs. The last time Dave! hosted, he formatted his presentation like a back-to-school ad for school or office supplies. This time, he approaches the back-to-school theme differently, formatting his presentation like a law-school catalog.

blogger n. a person with a computer and an opinion

From Howard Bashman by way of Carolyn Elefant, here is U.S. Ninth Circuit Judge Alex Kozinski’s take on blogging (and on Howard):

I just think it’s so self-indulgent, you know. Oh, I'm so proud of what I’m saying, I think the world instantly wants to know what I’m thinking today. People wake up thinking, hmm, what does this person, whoever the blog, the question is — I wonder what great thoughts have come into his mind this morning that I can feel myself edified by. I can’t really have breakfast, really enjoy my day until I hear the great thoughts of Howard Bashman — I don’t think so. I go for months without ever knowing what Howard has to say. So I don’t know. I find it sort of self-indulgent. And I find it so grandiloquent.

Blawg Review retrospective

The 100th installment of Blawg Review — the law-related blog carnival — is up and running at the Blawg Review’s home office. In this week’s installment, the anonymous Blawg Review Editor (affectionately known as Ed.) visits each prior host of Blawg Review (including Minor Wisdom) to tell us what they’re all up to lately. Like Endymion or Bacchus, it’s a long, interesting, and colorful parade — a fitting celebration of a big milestone. Congratulations to Ed. for pulling it off.
