Coffee!

About a half hour ago, my Katrina-induced sojourn in Not New Orleans became a bit more tolerable: I found an honest-to-God coffee house, complete with palatable coffee, bohemian ambience, and (they say) free Wi-Fi. It's called Coffee Star, and it's at 226 Laurel Street in downtown Baton Rouge. It reminds me of Rue de la Course, and that's saying a lot.

Local flavor

Starbucks' invasion of New Orleans has fared only slightly better than the British invasion in 1814.  Against the local competition, they have survived, but have not prevailed.  This story from the Times Picayune has some interesting numbers.

When you visit New Orleans, do yourself a favor.  Pass on the McCoffee, and go for the real thing.  Try Cafe du Monde, or PJ's, or CC's, or Rue de la Course, or ...

Quality beats quantity

Today's Times-Picayune reports that New York has supplanted New Orleans as the nation's No. 1 port for coffee. So why can't I find a decent cup of coffee in NYC?
