Forty years ago today, a man born with half of a right foot, nicknamed “Stumpy” by his teammates, kicked the longest field goal in NFL history. Until last February, it was the greatest moment in Saints history. Here is the kick itself:

Wow. I remember that kick vividly. 63 yards seemed inconceivable. It may only be a slight exaggeration to say that a 63 yard field goal then was as unimaginable as Bob Beamon's long jump at the 1968 Summer Olympics. And by a guy with half a foot! Thanks for reminding me of that moment of amazement and wonder.
