The second weekend of Jazz Fest starts a little after 11:00 a.m. today. According to the Weather Underground, we have about a 40% chance of rain. That’s okay; my rain poncho is ready for action.
Today’s lineup is solid. It presents some tough choices between 2:00 and 4:00. Anders Osborne is playing the Acura stage at 2:05. At the same time, on the opposite end of the Fair Grounds, Theresa Andersson is playing the Gentilly Stage. One tie-breaker could be who’s playing close by afterwards—after one set, it’s great to just scoot over to a nearby stage and immediately catch another great act. But here again, it’s a tough choice. Just as Anders will be finishing up at Acura, Sunpie and the Louisiana Sunspots will be getting started nearby in the Blues Tent. I consider Sunpie Louisiana’s most underrated zydeco musician. Meanwhile, on the other side of the world, just as Theresa is finishing her set at Gentilly, the New Birth Brass Band will be getting started nearby at Congo Square.
Another tough choice comes at the end of the day: Rosie Ledet at 6:00 at Fais-Do-Do, or Emmylou Harris at 5:25 on the Gentilly Stage, or Solomon Burke at 5:45 at Congo Square?
Also circled on my schedule: Little Freddie King, 12:25, Blues Tent, and the Mississippi Mass Choir, 4:20, Gospel Tent.
