Proof that I used to be a good runner
Yesterday I noticed that our Christmas decorations did not include a manger scene. So with nothing much else to do, Suzanne (my wife) and I dug into the backroom closets in search of Jesus Mary & Joseph. We did not find the Holy Family. But we did find an old issue of Running Times, circa 1986, with an account of that year’s Barathon. I did quite well that year, coming in second at 35:19 despite some problems with navigation.

You are such a LAWYER when you define yourself as having been a good runner based on TIME. I admit that is an amazing time and you should be proud. But this site has shown enough of the Eastern philosophy to tell me that you should decide now what it means to be a "good runner" and meet that new goal rather than worrying why you can't run 35 min for a 10k anymore.

Hmmm, Alan, maybe you're right. As one who fills out time sheets, I should perhaps aim for the slowest possible time. (Note to any clients reading this: I'm joking!!) Seriously though, nowadays the goal is to get my butt out of bed every morning early enough to get a half-hour run in before breakfast. I stopped worrying about time when I figured out that all my personal records were out of reach; that happened sometime in the late 1980s or early 1990s.
