"It was 10 years ago today ..."
On February 6, 1996, R.L. Burnside and his adopted son, Kenny Brown, received a visit from the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion. The place: Lunati Farms in Holly Spring, Mississippi. The result: A Ass Pocket of Whiskey. This isn’t necessarily R.L.’s best album (see Too Bad Jim). Nor is it necessarily R.L.'s most ass-kicking album (see Mr. Wizard). It’s not universally loved (see the Rolling Stone’s review). It’ll have to settle for being the edgiest blues album ever recorded. Then there's the album cover, which is exactly on the edge. I miss RL...what a (re)discovery.
