Or more accurately, what's wrong with the leadership of the Catholic Church? Richard Rohr tries to answer that question, and says things that I've been thinking for a while.
P.S. (2/23/05, 8:00 p.m.): On re-reading Fr. Rohr's piece, I couldn't help thinking about the Archdiocese of New Orleans, comparing the two archbishops appointed by JP2 to the archbishop that preceded them: Philip M. Hannan. I don't agree with Hannan's stance on many political issues, but the man was (is) a leader. Despite my disagreement with Hannan, I respect and admire him. His successors--well, I really don't know where they stand ideologically (never a problem with Hannan), though I assume they are 100% orthodox. Their views on politics may well be identical to Hannan's. But compared to Hannan, they're so bland. My impression as a man in the pews: I guess they're competent administrators and nice guys. They're not bad guys, but they're not leaders.
