The first installment on my inheritance

AlexisHere is the first thing I've inherited from my mom's estate: Alexis, whom Suzanne has dubbed Lexis. It looks like she'll fit in with the rest of the herd. Very little hissing so far; mostly it's been fear and curiosity all the way around. And staring. A lot of staring.

What's wrong with the Catholic Church?

Or more accurately, what's wrong with the leadership of the Catholic Church? Richard Rohr tries to answer that question, and says things that I've been thinking for a while.

P.S. (2/23/05, 8:00 p.m.): On re-reading Fr. Rohr's piece, I couldn't help thinking about the Archdiocese of New Orleans, comparing the two archbishops appointed by JP2 to the archbishop that preceded them: Philip M. Hannan. I don't agree with Hannan's stance on many political issues, but the man was (is) a leader. Despite my disagreement with Hannan, I respect and admire him. His successors--well, I really don't know where they stand ideologically (never a problem with Hannan), though I assume they are 100% orthodox. Their views on politics may well be identical to Hannan's. But compared to Hannan, they're so bland. My impression as a man in the pews: I guess they're competent administrators and nice guys. They're not bad guys, but they're not leaders.

Well I done got old

It had been a few weeks since I hit the weights. So yesterday morning I decided to ease back into the weight-training routine with a set of seven exercises using a 40-lb. barbell, which is practically nothing. Maybe 10 to 12 reps of each exercise. The whole routine took something like 15 minutes.

Overnight, rigor mortis set in. Today I've been walking around like the 110-year-old man. I feel like I need to sing that Junior Kimbrough song: "Well I done got old / Can't do the things I used to do / 'Cause I'm an old man."
